Bollywood needs to be classy

10 11 2006

I was having this discussion with a friend of mine this last weekend that Bollywood movies need some class. We rip off Hollywood action flicks, thrillers, dramas, romantic comedies but are still not able to deliver a product which is truly international in terms of quality. Being a big bollywood movie buff, I feel sad when I compare our movies with Hollywood.

I can’t imagine talented directors like Farhan Akthar, Kunal Kohli, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Rajkumar Hirani, Aditya Chopra (No, Karan Johar, Ram Gopal Varma or Sanjay Bhansali in the list) can’t come up with one classy movie that would be in level with Hollywood standards. I expected ‘Don’ to be a classy movie but it was not….even when it was made with today’s modern technology and modern story telling. We definitely need a movie that could be a good thriller with suspense something like Mission Impossible, Broken Arrow, FaceOff.

I agree we lack in terms of modern technology but then if we can pay millions of dollars to our star actors, I am sure we can use some amount of that to get the best of technology for the movie. Most of the world’s IT technology and software are being developed in India and that means we have a rich pool of talented people that we could use. The other area where I feel we need a lot of work, is screenplay. But then what good is a screenplay without a good story. The audience is taken for a ride and is made to assume things which are logically and technologically not possible. Logic should only be kept away from comedies not thrillers, dramas or action. ‘Don’ had an amazing story but the place where it needed work is the screenplay. It’s hard to assume a desi Don in Malaysia when the story was based in India. With a pool of talented writers and directors I wouldn’t say its hard to come up with a story and a screenplay that is so strong that it can compete with the best movies in the world.

Bollywood movies have over the years relied too much on family dramas, romantic comedies, hollywood ripoffs and southindian movie remakes. Very few original ideas have made it to the big screen and those which did…have made a huge impact – Rang de Basanti, Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Dil Chahta Hai, Lagaan. I think its time for someone to move forward and accept the responsibility of creating a truly world-class movie.

BTW, I wish Rang De Basanti good luck for the Best Foriegn Film at the Oscars.
